Community Conversations An ongoing collaboration of Capital Public Radio, Sacramento Region Community Foundation and The Sacramento Bee
Community Conversations offers a forgotten way to become an informed citizen – by talking and listening to your neighbors.
Our goal for Community Conversations is simple—to give neighbors a chance to listen to each other and learn from one another's thinking.
Our hope is bolder — that informal discussion of local issues in a non-politicized environment will lead to better informed, more engaged citizens with fresh optimism that problems can be solved through human interaction.
Issues of vital importance to our community need to be publicly discussed by citizens from many walks of life and shades of perspective - in a respectful environment where all thoughts are welcome. Community Conversations will create gathering places for neighbors to enjoy the experience of mutual learning and civil discussion feeding their appetites for lifelong learning and community engagement.
The next Community Conversation will take place on July 13, 2010! Our topic: "Budget Cuts: What are we willing to do without and what are we willing to do about the rest?"

War on Poverty: the Great Society to the Great Recession
When Lyndon B. Johnson became president after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, he put the power of his presidency behind a remarkable series of reform initiatives. The legislation was geared toward boosting economic opportunity, a theme captured by his administration’s catchphrase, the Great Society. "This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America," he said during his 1964 State of the Union address.
But poverty remains an abiding problem in America. Nearly 40 million Americans or 13.2% of the population live in poverty. The poverty rate for children is even higher. And most experts expect poverty rates will go up due to the economic trauma of our current times, what many refer to as the Great Recession.
Monday we'll air an American Radio Works special that examines poverty in America, the extreme poor, food stamps, aid to dependent children and the impact of our current economic downturn on the working poor.
Listen Monday, July 5 at 10:00 am on Capital Public Radio's News & Jazz Station.
