Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Converge On California

Last weekend California was the center of the political world.

Fourteen Democratic presidential candidates were in San Francisco for the state's Democratic Convention.

The Golden State has long set the policy agenda for other blue states, and after moving its primary up to March 2020 it’s helping shape the presidential race too.

All weekend CapRadio followed the candidates with a focus on the issues most important to Californians, and we're sharing our takeaways all this week. Here are some highlights from our team:

  • Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler and producer Sally Schilling spoke with four undecided California Democratic Party delegates about what they’re looking for in a presidential candidate, and how those who appeared at the convention measured up.
  • Each of the 14 candidates in attendance gave seven-minute speeches to some 5,000 delegates inside one lively hall, drawing everything from raucous cheers to prolonged boos. You can listen to them all here.
  • PolitiFact California Reporter Chris Nichols fact-checked claims made by the candidates in their speeches, including one by Sen. Kamala Harris about the impact of President Trump’s tariffs.

You can see photos and look back through dispatches from our reporters on our live blog, and find all of our coverage and analysis from the weekend here.
