CapRadio Board Champions
Capital Public Radio is honored by the guidance provided by our Board of Directors. CapRadio Board Champions is our opportunity to share their stories.
As Executive Director of AT&T’s Sacramento External Affairs office, Donna Burke was encouraged to get involved with local nonprofit organizations, to be part of the community where she lived and worked. And she had a few favorites, Capital Public Radio among them. First introduced to Capital Public Radio by a neighbor when she moved to Sacramento in 2008, Donna enjoyed everything about it – the news and information, the entertainment shows like Wait, Wait… and the music, especially jazz. And soon, she was not only a listener, but a donor, finding out her husband, Gregory, was listening to his favorite program, Excellence in Jazz, far more often than she knew.
She felt a special affinity with the mission and vision, Capital Public Radio was organization she could contribute to, not only with financial contributions, but as a leader sharing skills and expertise gained through her years in the business community.
In 2009, Donna was invited to join the Board of Directors by her friend and long time board member, Barbara O’Connor and she welcomed the opportunity. She became a member of the Board and was soon chair of the Marketing Committee. Her goals, when she joined the Board were to engage more, use her skills to help promote the station, and have fun being part of a great community organization.
In 2010, Donna retired from AT&T and wasn’t sure what that meant for her involvement, but she knew she still wanted to participate as much as ever. And to her delight, the Nominating Committee asked her if she would be interested in becoming the Chair of the Board. So in 2012, Donna was elected to a two year term as Chair of the Board of Capital Public Radio.
As a member of the Board of Directors, Donna became involved in many aspects of the station – answering phones during fund drives, making thank you calls, participating in events. When asked what her favorite event was, she answered, “I enjoy Second Saturdays, but the flash mob at last year’s Record Sale was so much fun! It would be great to get the Board to mirror the passion of the staff and volunteers.”
And Donna shares that passion! One of her goals as Chair is to have Board Members get to know the staff better, to understand and share their passion of public radio. Her goals for Capital Public Radio include improving the use of technology to be more efficient, to promote Capital Public Radio, to touch more people, use social media, to better reflect to our marketplace. Other goals include promoting more diversity – on our staff, on our board, and on our air – and attracting younger listeners, and to maintain and build on our relationship with Sac State – our partner in bringing Capital Public Radio to our community.
Donna and Gregory Burke just celebrated 31 years of marriage. They have two sons, Devan and Kellien. Devan volunteered at a public television station in Michigan while in high school, and Kellien volunteered at Capital Public Radio, also for a high school community service project. Both are fans of public broadcasting – TV and Radio.
When asked what her favorite programs are she said, “I love it all. I love the news. It’s quotable. I learn something new whenever I listen. It makes me sound smart and knowledgeable. I listen to classical music with my mom and enjoy jazz on my own. Wait, Wait… is so much fun. This American Life shares so much humanity. I am intrigued with A Prairie Home Companion – how does he do that? I love Devin Yamanaka’s voice and Beth Ruyak is everything local. It’s all great. I love it all!”
Donna is truly a champion sharing with all her friends and family, her passion for Capital Public. She is a proud member of the Capital Public Radio family. She truly believes in the power of Capital Public Radio to make a difference in people’s lives, to make a difference in our community.
