CapRadio Champions

Capital Public Radio is honored by the support of many individuals throughout our listening area. CapRadio Champions is our opportunity to share their stories.

Dustin and Christina HindsNewlyweds Dustin and Christina Hinds started listening to Capital Public Radio many years ago as their busy work and travel schedules would allow. However, since becoming full-time Sacramento residents three years ago, they are now steadfast, consistent listeners of The News Station, 90.9 KXJZ. The Hindses have been donors since 2010, when Dustin was inspired to give their first gift during an on-air fund drive.

When asked what motivates them to support the Station, Dustin says “I really dislike listening to advertisements on the radio and I know there is a price to pay for the privilege to listen to uninterrupted content. As an avid listener, I feel that we are obligated to shoulder some of the financial load.”

The Hindses both grew up in El Dorado County, around Placerville. Dustin and Christina both talk about growing up in the gold country with a sense of pride and often joke about attending rival high schools in the area, but are quick to point out that it was not at the same time. Dustin continued on to San Diego State and earned a degree in Accounting and Christina attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in Sociology.

Dustin and Christina connected when they both moved back to the Sacramento area. Currently Dustin is a Senior Business Development Manager at a national traffic industry and building management firm. Christina played professional tennis for almost a decade and retired in 2011. Her career took her all over the world and she was fortunate enough to play in high-level tournaments including Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Since retirement, Christina has transitioned into real estate.

When asked if he has a favorite on-air host or show, Dustin said Insight with Beth Ruyak without hesitation. “Beth is very soothing to listen to and I love the way she effortlessly relates to so many different people.” In addition to Insight, they both listen to Morning Edition almost every day, which Christina says “has sparked plenty of spirited debates in our household.” One memorable story that resonated with both of them recently was an interview with Monica Seles.

With Christina’s recent retirement from professional tennis, they found it timely and interesting to hear Seles describe some of the difficulties she faced in her life after tennis. The Hindses value community involvement and Capital Public Radio helps them learn about Sacramento and events happening around town. When they are not listening to Capital Public Radio, Dustin and Christina enjoy sports, being active (Dustin has completed 9 marathons), learning the ways of do-it-yourself home improvements and keeping busy with their 7 nieces and 1 nephew.
